View from my Window 1 & 2

After not having painted for 10 days, I was desperate today to put some paint on canvas. Wanted to do something quick as I have lots of school work, so decided to do a Plein Aire oil sketch of the view outside my study/studio window.

By the time I was done, I realized that there was no real focal point and that set up some tension for the viewer. So I decided to use up the remaining paint on my palette and try again. This one has much better balance and is "easier" to view. Just wish I'd done it a bit bigger!

This painting is a recreation of one that I painted in the late 1980's and subsequently lost in our house fire on Dec23, 1999. I love lush gardens, rose arbors and paths. The painting had been one of my favorites and was the first painting I did on my own. It was heartbreaking to lose it. Recently, I came across a photograph which had a 1"x3/4" image of the painting in it. I digitally enlarged it and this painting is the result. Similar but different!

Here is the original version.
